Since I began drawing the webcomic Slipstream, time management with a podcast and two blogs has become an issue. While I plan on continuing doing The Superman Fan Podcast and Slipstream, I have finally had to come to the realization that I cannot sustain everything I have been doing on the internet. Sadly, I have decided to end this blog so that I can better devote my time to my podcast and webcomic.

I want to thank you for taking the time out of your busy day to show some interest in the comic books I read every week. While I will miss posting about the titles I'm reading, I am looking forward to reading comic books again as a fan, without having to think about how I'll rate each issue and what comments I'll post.

While the comic book industry has struggled in recent years, there doesn't seem to be a scarcity of comic book titles competing for an audience. Superheroes are the foundation of my love for comic books, and I'll never stop reading them, but as I get older I've become more interested in exploring independent comic books. I hope to explore more independent titles as time and money allow.

Thanks again for reading this blog, and remember, there's always another great comic book waiting to be read. And I still look forward to visiting my local comic book shop, Acme Comics in Longwood, Florida.

I saw some of the pages from A Child Is Born, drawn by Billy Tucci, when he appeared at MegaCon back in March. Needless to say, the art was exquisite as he always does. A Child Is Born is a comic book adaption of the Birth of Christ. It's now released at the perfect time for the Christmas season. To learn more about this comic book, go to the website Apostle Arts.

I wasn't able to go to the comic book shop last week, so I'm going to have a nice little stack to read after I go to my local comic book shop, Acme Comics, this Saturday.

Legion Lost #3 (DC) * * *

The lost Legionnaires search for signs if Alastor is still alive in order to find a cure for the pathogen spreading among 21st Century humans. While the other Legionnaires try to cobble together some equipment that will work in this more primitive era, Timber Wolf follows a trail on his own and makes a shocking discovery.

Unlike other reviews of some of DC's new 52 titles which are critical of what they feel is a lack of story, Legion Lost tells a solid story. It continues to develop the mystery of the pathogen from the 31st Century, and the Legion's struggles to survive in a more primitive time, and solve a problem they feel partly responsible for. After the revelation in this issue, I can't wait to read the next issue.

Star Trek/Legion Of Super-Heroes #2 (of 6) (IDW/DC) * * * *

After some quick scenes of life on various worlds of the Empire, both the Legionnaire's and Captain Kirk's landing party try to escape from angry crowds and find good hiding places. Spock is able to discover how this Earth's history, and this issue ends with one question: How will both marooned groups react to each other when they meet. We're given tantalizing glimpses to the identity to this Empire's Emperor. Is it Vandal Savage?

While it's taking a few issues to almost get both groups together, it doesn't feel like the plot is thin or the story padded. This issue has built story tension as our heroes have to escape danger, find a safe hideout, and figure out a way to get to their own universe. Now that the stage is set, almost, I can't wait to read how the two groups interact to solve their common threat.

Rachel Rising #3 (Abstract Studios) * * * * *

Rachel goes to a nightclub, and has a strange interaction with another woman that hints at another way Rachel's trauma has affected her. The mysterious blonde woman from the previous issue is also there, and another person is driven to extreme behavior after meeting her, just as in last issue. That story is also continued in this issue as well.

Terry Moore continues to develop an excellent horror story, revealing a little more of the mystery with each issue, giving us a satisfying chunk of story and drawing us into the plot, bringing us back for next issue. He knows how to craft an excellent horror story without the gore.

Legion Of Super-Heroes #3 (DC) * * * *

One team of Legionnaires fight the Dominion fleet and the Daxamite Res-Vir, while Brainiac 5 learns more about Glorith's powers, while Cosmic Boy leads another group to Daxam to learn more about Res-Vir.

First of all, I love the Chris Sprouse pencilled and Karl Story inked cover. This story had the usual touches I enjoy in a Legion story, action, character development and a touch of humor to break the tension in the right places. When I think of the Dominion, I'm reminded of the plot line from the "5 years later" Legion series, which was the first monthly Legion series I collected. I'm looking forward to reading this new 52 version of the Dominion. My only criticism of this story is that I prefer the egg like design of the Dominion from the 5 years later Legion title than this sereis. It reminds me of a Klingon ship, but this is only a very minor quibble.

All-Star Western #2 (DC) * * * *

Jonah Hex and Dr. Arkham learn the secret behind the secret evil taking over Gotham City and face off against their forces in typical Jonah Hex style.We learn more about their plot and how they plan to carry it out, but Jonah might have a different opinion about that. Moritat's art is excellent, conveying the dark tone of the story in vivid detail. I don't know who Dr. Arkham is more scared of, Hex or the evil forces they're fighting, but at least he knows to stay close to Jonah.Do't miss the second story at the back of the issue, starring the classic DC western hero El Diablo, who is drawn into a fight against a foe that is popular in movies and TV these days, but no sparkles are involved, if you know what I mean.

Legion: Secret Origin #1 (of 6) (DC) * * * *

I have to agree with the hosts of the Legion Of Substitute Podcasters hosts. As much as I've enjoyed the new Legion title, this may have been a better choice to use as the first issue of that series. While I love the Legion, there are a lot of characters, which may intimidate some comic book readers. But speaking for myself, that doesn't stop me from picking up a new title if I come in during the middle of it. One of my favorite comic book series is Planetary. My first issue was #19. But it was such an interesting story, and so different from the average superhero title, that I picked it up and gradually bought the back issues. Maybe Legion: Secret Origin will still draw in new readers.

It doesn't so much change the classic Legion origin, as it does add some behind the scene details. UP forces investigate an attack on a planet, and and find a strange device. Brainiac 5 is called in to investigate. Meanwhile we are introduced to a few members of a mysterious agency of the United Planets, who are drawn to that case, as well as three teenagers who save R. J. Brande, one of the richest men in the Galaxy, from assassins. And there's more to Brande than meets the eye, or at least than we've seen in past Legion series. The Legion takes its first steps as a few gifted teens join the founding trio.

What I like most about this first issue is that it doesn't try to change anything that is familiar about the Legion's founding to longtime readers like myself, as it does add new details and background to the origin, which make a classic story seem fresh and new. And, with DC's new 52 relaunch, it's appropriate to have a new origin story to hopefully introduce the Legion to new readers.

Superman #2 (DC) * * * *

I'm continuing to enjoy this new Superman, even if he doesn't wear the red underwear on the outside anymore (not that I'm interested in what he wears under his uniform). Superman and General Lane consult about the threat the Man of Steel faced in the first issue. Clark and Lois have a conversation about the changes in their relationship with her new job, and it does a great job of filling in the background of what their relationship has been in the past. I did like this fight better than the first issue. Whoever is behind these attacks has found a way to challenge Superman in a unique way in this issue. What I like most about it is that Superman is able to think fast on his feet to get a handle on his mysterious opponent. And is that a familiar place the Man of Steel's in at the end of the issue?

Action Comics #3 (DC) * * * *

The issue begins with a flashback to Krypton, drawn by Gene Ha. It takes place in Kandor, as Lara and the infant Kal-El visit family. Clark Kent gets a visit by the police about his campaign against Metropolis corruption and a possible connection with Superman.Clark joins Lois and Jimmy at a diner to discuss the fallout of Glenmorgan's confrontation with Superman, then compete for the same story. Then a military experiment goes awry. This was another solid issue of the new Action Comics. Writer Grant Morrison is crafting a great story about Superman's early years. Morrison has brought some of the Man of Steel's Golden Age origins into modern day and updated them to craft a refreshing story. We get a sense of Clark's isolation as he is in the process of getting his feet under him as he begins his career as a superhero. We haven't yet learned the nature of the alien threat approaching Earth, but long time Superman readers might have a good guess as to who it is. Reading Superman is fun again.

Invincible #84 (Skybound/Image) * * * *

The cover is very simple, but its simplicity catches the eye. It really sums up the issue. Invincible makes some decisions that promise to change the course of his superhero career. He's not turning evil, but thinks he's found a different way of saving lives as a superhero. Not everyone is happy with his decision. This is what I like about Robert Kirkman's writing. The Invincible co-creator is not afraid to do anything with his main characters, which make his comic books a great read.

I've got a lot going on this Saturday, so I won't be going to my local comic book shop, Acme Comics, until next week.

So far, I'm enjoying reading about the Legionnaires marooned in the 21st Century, and, now that the players have been introduced in the Star Trek/Legion crossover, I'm anxious to read what's going to happen next to both casts of characters. Chris Roberson's writing was the only thing that made the Grounded storyline bearable, after he took over for original Grounded writer J. Michael Straczynski, so I have faith that he has created a well-crafted story for this mini-series.

Of the three titles I'm getting this week, I'm going to save Rachel Rising for last. I've enjoyed Terry Moore's writing and art so much that his new series promises to be the best read each week it's published. He just doesn't know who to create a bad comic book.

Legion Lost #2 (DC) * * *

In the aftermath of the destruction that occurred in Red Lake Falls, Minnesota in last month's first issue, we learn in this one what brought the Legionnaires to the 21st Century. They continue the pursuit of their quarry. The creative team didn't drag out the mystery about why the team time traveled to the past. I like the art style, and the creative team is doing a solid job of setting up the storyline of this new title, giving us a second Legion series to look forward to each month.

Legion Of Super-Heroes #2 (DC) * * * *

First of all, I love the Chris Sprouse cover. I've always loved his art. We learn more about the renegades who are sabotaging Watchworld. It makes an interesting story to see the Legion counterattack. Brainiac 5 becomes interested in Glorith's abilities, setting up a future plot line, I'm sure. Meanwhile Earth Man is laid to rest at the Graveyard of Heroes. Shadow Lass's grief will also be part of future plot developments. This new Legion title has lost none of the steam from the last one. Paul Levitz and team are crafting some great Legion issues. It's much appreciated, after the last few years of sputtering relaunches, most of which were good, but the Legion never seemed to build a firm foundation. That's no longer a problem.

Star Trek/Legion Of Super-Heroes #1 (IDW/DC) * * * *

This issue is mostly about setting up the story, but it does build to a satisfying climax and cliffhanger, which left me looking forward to the second issue. We are also introduced to at least one of DC's classic science fiction characters, granted in a new situation. The art is good, but in a few spots is a little uneven, but it's not terrible. This first issue pulls from several threads of original Star Trek mythology to lay down a firm foundation for what promises to be a great mini-series.

Fables #110 (Vertigo/DC) * * * *

Bufkin and friends continue their quest in Oz, gaining an unexpected ally in this issue. While Snow's and Bigby's children continue to train in order to determine who will inherit their Grandfather's position as the North Wind, the other three Winds discuss how to proceed. Miss Duglas continues her sword training, and we learn a little more about her trainer. Bufkin and the Oz story was the most interesting part of the issue, while the other plot lines advanced their individual stories. This current story line has some interesting balls in the air, and I look forward to each issue to read how they'll develop.

It looks like I've got a good week of comic book reading ahead of me. I'm looking forward to read what's going to happen to Jonah Hex and Dr. Arkham in the second issue of All-Star Western, and it doesn't look good.

With DC's new 52, I can't wait to read this new origin for the Legion Of Super-Heroes, written by long time Legion scribe Paul Levitz. And speaking of the new 52, it's a joy to look forward to the latest issues of Action Comics and Superman, a feeling I haven't felt for a few years.

Last but not least, Invincible is going through a dark time, and there's no telling what writer and co-creator Robert Kirkman will put Mark Grayson through next.

Going to my local comic shop, Acme Comics, has been more fun than ever, a trip I look forward to each week.

DC's New 52 continues into its second month. This week it's the turn of the lost Legionnaires in the 21st Century. Now that the stranded Legionnaires are introduced and the obstacles they're facing have been introduced, we'll see if this title can support a good story without the seasoned Legion hands of writer Paul Levitz.

Since this week I've only got one title on my pull list, I'm not sure if I'll be driving to my local comic book shop, Acme Comics in Longwood, Florida. I might save gas and wait until next week, when it'll be payday. I'll see how it goes.

Issue #135: Comic Books For The Week Of Wednesday, October 5, 2011:

Invincible #83 (Skybound/Image) * * * *

Invincible learns a shocking secret, then continues to adjust to his changing home life with Atom Eve. Two of Invincible's arch villains go through life altering events, and Robot and Monster Girl struggle to adjust to like back on Earth.

Mark is still going through a period of adjustment in his career as a superhero. I still wonder if the setbacks he suffered in recent issues are consequences from the end of the Viltrumite War. How and when he will emerge from his funk is unknown. It's not looking like it's going to happen any time soon. We still don't know what tragedies Robot and Monster Girl suffered elsewhere. I wonder how Cecil is going to use his new "assets" in future crises.

This storyline after the Viltrumite War seems like it's setting up future plotlines, but in the capable hands of Robert Kirkman and company, it's far from boring. Each issue in this "quiet" story builds more anticipation for when things will heat up again for Invincible. As Robert Kirkman has shown before, it will happen, and sooner rather than later.

Action Comics #2 (DC) * * * *

As the cover shows, superman is now in the hand of Government forces. And it's not hard to guess who the bald guy is in the upper left corner in the background. Superman shows he can dish it out as well as he takes it.We're introduced to Dr. Irons and John Corben, so I wonder how long it will be before we meet their alter egos, as we knew them in their last continuities.

Just like the first issue, this one lives up to the title. There's a lot of action between Superman and Army troops. I like Rags Morales' art, except for one panel each where Superman and Lois look off. Superman seems a little small in one panel, and Lois seems to have a stronger chin in another, resembling a European woman more than the Lois Lane we're familiar with elsewhere in the issue. I'm still pleased with this issue. I like where this story is going, so I guess I'll wait until the second storyline before having a final opinion about this new Man of Steel. So far, so good.

If you read my updated pull list post, you'll see that my list maxes out my comic book budget. So I can't afford to buy any extra titles or back issues. Issue # 134: After DC's New 52, My Updated Pull List:

Now that DC's relaunch is complete, and their second issues are published this month, here's my updated pull list from my local comic book shop, Acme Comics in Longwood, Florida. Because of my limited comic book buying budget, I wasn't lucky enough to do what some of the podcasters I listen to were able to do, and buy all 52 of DC's new #1 issues. With one exception, I stuck to my favorites from DC, Superman and the Legion of Super-Heroes. The other title I sampled also made the list, but I expected it to.

When I get home after visiting my local comic book shop, Acme Comics in Longwood, Florida, I read them in the reverse order of what I anticipate to be the best issue that week, based on my experiences with previous issues, except for first issues of course. In other words, I save what I think will be the best issue for last. For at least the past year, sadly, Superman hasn't made it to the bottom of my stack. With DC Comics' new 52 I decided to save it for last, since I enjoyed Action Comics #1 so much.

All-Star Western #1 (DC) * * * * *

I'm not a big fan of the western genre in comics per say, but I did enjoy Gray and Palmiotti's recently cancelled Jonah Hex series. Sadly, I had to drop it for budgetary reasons, but I had a little room in my comic book buying allowance, and this was an easy choice. I haven't read a lot of their comic book titles, but what I have read I enjoy because of their knack for unique characterizations and development. This issue did not disappoint. Jonah Hex arrived in the Gotham City of the late 1800's, at the invitation of Dr. Arkham, to investigate a rash of murdered prostitutes. Hex quickly placed his stamp on the town, and we visit a good cross section of the city, from high society to the slums. By the end of the issue there appears to be more going on than meets the eye. Because of a clue on the back page, I couldn't help but wonder if a younger Ra's Al Ghul is involved. I'm not giving away any spoilers, just sharing a guess just on the slim chance that I may be right. I have already added this title to my pull list.

Rachel Rising #2 (Abstract Studios) * * * * *

In this issue we are introduced to a member of Rachel;s supporting cast, and a little girl finds a stranger in her house. What stood out for me the most about this issue was Terry Moore's ability to craft dialogue in a way to reveal a character's history in such a natural conversational way, without feeling like necessary but clunky info dump via word balloons in your average comic book. It draws us into Rachel's world and the mystery she is attempting to solve. The final scene made me realize that something deeper was going on under the surface of the main story, and left me wishing the third issue would hurry up and get here.

Superman #1 (DC) * * * * *

Out with the old and in with the new, and that's how this issue begins (although I'll leave it up to you to discover how). As much as I enjoyed Action Comics #1, I wasn't sure how much I would enjoy this issue. George Pérez wrote and laid out this issue, which was drawn by Jesús Merino. Surprisingly, I liked it a little bit better than Action #1. This was a much denser story, meaning no criticism of Action, with up to twelve panels per page. I found that I didn't mind Superman's new costume. There were elements of the Julius Schwartz era of Superman continuity brought into this new continuity, but changed and updated in a refreshing way. We're introduced to the supporting cast in the middle of covering a breaking story, which is a great way to get a feel for the characters, under pressure. It will be interesting to watch the Clark/Lois/Superman relationship unfold in this new continuity. After reading this issue I had the urge to read it again, which hasn't happened for an issue of Superman in a long time. I hope DC keeps up the good work. So far, I'm on board with this new Man of Steel.

Flashpoint: Project Superman #3 (of 3) (DC) * * *

In this final issue, the young Kryptonian Kal-El and Subject Zero have their final showdown. We see Lois as part of the Resistance. Most of the issue shows their final battle, but it is not devoid of emotion, as too many superhero battles are.The adversaries were evenly matched, and the ending was very touching. It was a good imaginary story. Of any of the event series from DC or Marvel, I wish I could have afforded to buy all if not most of the tie-in mini-series. I've loved imaginary stories since reading those classic Superman tales from the 1960's.

Legion Lost #1 (DC) * * * *

Someone goes berserk in a town or city, and a group of Legionnaires travel back in time to pursue him. Things go horribly wrong, this setting up the crisis (no DC Comics pun intended) that they face. This issue throws us right in the middle of the action, and doesn't give us a chance to catch our breath. The only thing I wish had been included, for new readers unfamiliar with the Legion of Super-Heroes, were text boxes for each Legionnaire showing their name and powers. But the story is interesting enough, and the characterizations well defined, that new readers may be interested enough to continue reading this title and learn as they go along. It looks like this group of Legionnaires is in for a wild ride.

Legion Of Super-Heroes #1 * * * *

Just as in Legion Lost #1, the regular Legion title opens with a team of Legionnaires on a mission to a border world. It appears an old enemy is menacing the United Planets again. Meanwhile the rest of the Legion deal with the repercussions of the battle that concluded the previous Legion series, complete with a statue for the latest dead Legionnaire. And some recent graduates of the Legion Academy fill the ranks of a depleted Legion. This title is among those least affected by DC's relaunch. This new series picks up where the old one left off, but it is still an excellent title.

Fables #109 (Vertigo/DC) * * * *

Snow's and Bigby's children are tested to determine who will be the new North Wind. Bufkin and his friends continue their quest in Oz while Mrs. Sprat continues her training. Red continues scouting the abandoned farm. The children are the main focus of this issue, if not this storyline. As the plot advances, my concern for their welfare increases, especially since I'm a father myself. The other plot lines advance a little more, but I enjoy this weaving of multiple plot threads in the issue. I know more excellent stories will be coming in the future.

I had to drop the previous Jonah Hex series, written by Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray, and drawn by various guest artists, because of budgetary reasons. I now have a little room for another title in my comic book buying budget, so I made sure not to miss this opportunity to read Palmiotti's and Gray's Jonah Hex stories again. If I enjoy the issue (which I expect to) I will be adding this title to my pull list.

Superman #1 (DC)

This title has been uneven in recent years, especially for the past 12 issues or so. I'm hoping that DC can get my enthused about new Superman stories again, something that hasn't been the case this year, sadly. I'm cautiously optimistic.

Rachel Rising #2 (Abstract Studios)

I have no doubts about this title. I've read the last dozen issues of Terry Moore's Strangers In Paradise and all of his just concluded Echo series, and there hasn't been a bad issue in the bunch. Each issue has had good characterization and development, strong plots and great art, especially a realistic portrayal of women. The first issue of this new series was no different. I will always make room for a Terry Moore comic book in my comic book buying budget.

Flashpoint: Project Superman #3 (OF 3) (DC) (originally published August 24, 2011.)

I missed this issue when it was published exactly a month ago today. The fine staff of Acme Comics were able to find a copy of this final issue. I enjoyed the first two issues of this Flashpoint tie-in mini-series, and would have hated to miss the conclusion. This was the only Flashpoint series I read, but in retrospect, I would have checked out more, if not all, of the Flashpoint event titles. I grew up on DC's Imaginary Stories with Superman, and Flashpoint seems like it was right up that alley. Unfortunately, my budget wouldn't have been able to handle it. So, I'll just have to settle for this title.

Legion Lost #1 (DC)

All I know about this title is that some members of the Legion of Super-Heroes get stuck in the past in "our" time. Since the Legion is my second favorite DC title after Superman, I have to check it out. I would be very surprised and disappointed if I don't like it.

This week I got two titles, Legion Of Super-Heroes #1, and Fables #109, both published bu DC.

Of all of DC's relaunches, Legion is supposed to be one of the titles least affected by the relaunch. Superman has been one of the characters who has been most affected by this relaunch, at least in Action Comics. Paul Levitz remains as the writer of this title. Based on his track record since he once again took over the writing chores of Legion, I feel the most confidence that the quality of stories will remain high after DC's relaunch.

Since Friday is payday, I will be going to my local comic book shop, Acme Comics in Longwood, Florida, on Saturday. Since I wasn't able to go last week, I'll be picking up Legion Lost #1 as well. I look forward to reading both Legion titles. While the main Legion title, from what little internet publicity I've read so far, will change the least when compared to other DC series, like Superman, Legion Lost will be about a group of Legionnaires stuck in the 21st Century. Since writer Paul Levitz returned to write the Legion, it has been a stronger title than it has been for years. There's a sense of continuity instead of constant reboots as a series of creative teams did good but completely different versions of the Legion. Now it's on a firm foundation and adding to a rich history of Legion Lore. With Legion Lost, I don't know what to expect, which is half the fun of reading a great comic book series. While the Superman and Legion titles are the only titles of DC's New 52 that I'll be getting, not knowing what's coming is part of the fun of going to the comic shop. And, of course, while Fables won't be affected by DC's relaunch, it has always been an excellent title to read each month.

How I read my new comic book issues each week is to shuffle the ones I look forward to reading most to the bottom of the stack, so that I save the best for last. For at least a year, a Superman issue hasn't made it to the bottom of the stack, unfortunately, until this week. I've purposefully avoided reading the internet publicity of the Superman relaunch, beyond the cover art of the new uniforms. It feels good to look forward to new Superman stories again. That's a feeling that's been missing for a while.

Invincible #82 (Skybound/Image) * * * * *

Invincible continues to have a crisis of confidence after recent events, and is reexamining his role in the world. He does think of a unique way to handle a villain he captured recently. As usual for this title, it's something you don't see in the average superhero title. Atom Eve is going through her own issues, and the world is not as admiring of Invincible after the recent destruction of a major American city. I can't help but wonder if this is another ramification from the aftermath of the Viltrumite War. I wonder what the world will think of Invincible if and when they discover that he allowed the Viltrumites to live on Earth. Also, a character returns after a long absence, setting up another future plot thread. There's not a lot of superhero action in this issue, but Robert Kirkman's knack for character development makes this as interesting of an issue as you could hope.

Action Comics #1 (DC) * * * *

Grant Morrison has been hit and miss for me, I was pleasantly surprised by this issue. Morrison can be incomprehensible at times with his stories, but there's none of that here. It's more in the vein of All-Star Superman than Superman Beyond 3-D, thank goodness. First of all, despite the changes with this relaunch, the basic characteristics of Superman's personality are recognizable. Morrison does a good job of incorporating bits of the golden age Superman into this new version of the Man of Steel. If I wasn't familiar with the original Superman and his rough and tumble crime fighting style, I might have found this new Superman a little disturbing. But he does harken back to his golden age roots. Most of the traditional supporting cast is introduced, and there is even a tiny reference to his connection to the Legion of Super-Heroes. There's a lot of action and plot development in this first issue, plenty for the reader to sink his teeth into. I do like this "primitive" look for his uniform, which I would call with no disrespect the "." Superman look. This new Superman shows that Truth and Justice aren't always the same as Law and Order. It's still early, but, so far, I dig this new Superman. I look forward to reading George Pérez's version of the Man of Steel in Superman #1 later this month.

Each week, after I return home with the titles I bought from my local comic book shop, Acme Comics, I arrange that week's titles in ascending order of my favorite titles, saving my favorite title of the week for last. Sadly for a Superman fan like myself, it's been a while since I've placed a Superman title at the bottom of the stack, especially on week's I've bought Invincible. This week, I'm saving Action Comics #1 for last. I've kept from most of the internet coverage and speculation about the relaunched Man of Steel, wanting to read this new #1 issue of Action without the distractions of preconceptions influenced from anything I've read about it. I did read a little bit about this first storyline by writer Grant Morrison, and saw the cover art online. It piqued my interest, with what I'll call the "Jethro" Superman look, with a short sleeved Superman t-shirt, short cape, blue jeans and work shoes.(Jethro was a character in The Beverly Hillbillies TV show from the 1960's.)

Another think that intrigues me about this new Superman relaunch is the fact that I don't know what to expect. thanks to the less than stellar Grounded and Lex Luthor stories in the Superman titles, I'm looking forward to this relaunch, where the Man of Steel is concerned, more than I otherwise would have. I'm going into this DC relaunch with an open mind. If I decide I don't like the Superman titles, as much as I would hate to, I'll drop them and pick something else to read. It won't drive me out of reading comic books. I like the art form too much, and I'll just try out other titles that have interested me but I haven't been able to fit into my budget.

I hope this next year of reading Superman comic books is more interesting than this year has been.

Preview #50: Comic Book For The Week of September 7, 2011:

Action Comics #1 (DC)

Well, I can finally say that I can afford to buy a mint copy of Action Comics #1. I'm looking forward to Sueprman getting a fresh start, after about a year of less than fantastic stories. And with Grant Morrison writing this series, I hope that he does as good of a job as he did on All-Star Superman, and not the almost incomprehensible Superman Beyond, the two issue Final Crisis tie-in (even though I did enjoy it).

This is going to be an interesting time to be a comic book fan in general, and a Sueprman fan in particular. I don't know what to expect, which makes me look forward to reading Superman comic books in a way I haven't felt in too long.

My hope is that the relaunched DC Comics, and Sueprman in particular, can reach a new generation, as the Man of Steel has done for the past seven decades. While I am happy with what has become the traditional Superman costume, I'm okay with the new, redesigned Superman costume. I agree with the thought I've heard other comic book podcasters express, that every generation has a right to their version of super heroes, and Superman in particular. Maybe this relaunch can present super heroes in a way that appeals to this modern, younger generation.

Legion Of Super-Heroes #16 (DC) * * * *

First of all, I'll only say that I wasn't surprised at who was killed at the end of the issue, but it didn't detract from my enjoyment of the issue. The battle lived up to the build up of previous issues, and showed the Legion doing what it does best, work together despite internal differences against anyone who threatens the galaxy. There were enough pages left at the end to have some character moments, which set up the upcoming relaunched Legion #1 next month.

Fables #108 (Vertigo/DC) * * * *

The main part of the story involves figuring out who among Bigby's and Snow's children will take their Grandfather's place as the North Wind. Red travels back to the farm to check it out. We also see the characters who we haven't heard from since issue #101, and we learn a little more about Mrs. Spratt's plans. There are several future plot lines developing here, which are tickling my interest. I look forward to read how they develop. I enjoy titles like Fables, Invincible and Legion which know how to juggle several plot lines in the same issue.

Action Comics #904 (DC) * * * *

Well, this storyline ended in a satisfactory fashion after all. Superman showed why he is the world's greatest heroes. Without spoiling anything, I'll just say that it's not about his super powers, but his heart. He will do whatever it takes to defend Earth, or any other planet for that matter, from anyone who threatens it. And he doesn't know how to handle it when he is on the receiving end of someone watching his back with the same dedication he shows. My favorite part of the issue was the end, where Clark and Lois having a rare dinner out (how many years has it been?). Lois sums up what makes Superman so unique, and worthy of being the first, and greatest superhero. I only wish that the powers that be at DC had taken her words to heart since New Krypton. Maybe issues of Superman and Action would have been better if they had. But that last page was a fitting wrap up of 25 years of various Superman continuities. Let's hope the relaunch will keep Superman on course to keep flying for another 75 years.

Superman Beyond #0 (One Shot) (DC) * * * *

The appearances of the elderly, black clad Superman with gray temples in the animated series Batman Beyond were among my favorite of that series, so I couldn't resist this issue when I saw it on the rack, despite the higher price. I wasn't disappointed. Superman found that retirement as a galactic tourist wasn't what he thought it was, so he returned to Earth. A super villain is driven over the edge because of some family matters, and their paths cross. The battle is full of great action, and I love the banter between the elderly Bruce and Clark. It reminds me of their give and take in Kingdom Come. The artists aren't my favorite, but they did do a great job of storytelling, which is the point, after all.

Next Men #9 (IDW) * * * * *

Who knew that time travel stories could make sense. When John Byrne brought back this series from the 1990's, and picked up where he left off, I was pleasantly surprised that this new series was as great as the original. It picked up where it left off, and I remembered enough from the original series to be able to understand. The remaining members embark on one last mission, and there are enough twists and turns in the plot, not to mention great character moments, to make this issue very interesting. After the last story page, there was a teaser page with only the words, Next Men: Aftermath #40 2012. So I guess we'll have to wait until next year for the next chapter of the Next Men saga. I'll be waiting.

Superman #714 (DC) * * * *

I'm surprised that I liked this issue so much, thanks to writer Chris Roberson, who was able to make this storyline bearable. We finally get to the bottom of Superman's mystery stalker and her motivations. This issue did a great job of tying up the various plot threads in a satisfying way, including the disagreement between Superman and Lois Lane. I also liked how the ending wrapped up with the various heroes that the Man of Steel met on his journey, including the Fortress of Solidarity, my favorite part of this series. It reminded me of the Fortress of Solitude of the Superman of 2965 during the silver age. Chris Roberson did a fantastic job of taking a bad story and making it bearable. It makes me wonder what he could have done if he hadn't been saddled with someone else's bad plot. I'll be sure to be first in line whenever Chris writes another Superman story.

Adventure Comics #529 (DC) * * * *

In this final issue before the new DC relaunch, the Legion Academy graduates face their biggest challenge yet when they have to fight Cosmic King to save Legion headquarters. The action is fast, furious and violent. I won't give any hints about whether or not everyone survives, but it is a battle worthy of Legionnaires. The ending leaves a little time for a little character development, and seems to set up the new Legion Of Super-Heroes #1, scheduled to be published on September 21, according to the teaser blurb at the bottom of the final page. The Legion Academy graduates showed a progression of maturity, going from immature cadets to mature heroes by the end of this issue. This storyline didn't let me down, and left me looking forward to the new series relaunch. It's good to see the Legion back on a solid foundation again, heading on a steady course.

Y The Last Man #1 (After Watchmen ... What's Next? $1.00 reprint Vertigo/DC) * * * *

I had heard of the series and its general plot, but had never read it, yet. I had a few extra dollars, so I decided to try this reprint of the first issue. We are introduced to various characters around the world, involved in various situations. By the end of the issue, the whole world is affected by something, and we see each character's reaction. I enjoy character driven stories, and this issue was a joy to read, and it left me interested in the rest of the series, which is the idea of these special priced reprints, after all. It worked for me.

Rachel Rising #1 (Abstract Studios) * * * * *

First of all, the cover stands out from anything else on the shelf. The story begins with a walk in the woods, and there's no dialogue for the first seven pages, and I was instantly drawn into the story. All I'll say is that something traumatic has happened to Rachel, and she has to figure out what it was. We are introduced to a few supporting characters, and the ending leaves my wanting to read more, which is what a Terry Moore comic book always manages to do.

Action Comics #904 (DC)

Legion Of Super-Heroes #16 (DC) This issue wraps up the Legion Of Super-Villains storyline, before next month's DC relaunch. For once, the Legion will be affected the least, supposedly. It would be a nice change from previous reboots, since Paul Levitz and the rest of his team have finally gotten the Legion on a steady course again.

Superman Beyond #0 (DC) I stretched my budget a little bit for this one shot title. I enjoyed the episode of Batman Beyond he appeared in, and couldn't resist this issue when I saw it on the rack.

Fables #108 (Vertigo/DC) Still enjoying this series very much. I only wish I had picked it up earlier.

Next Men #9 (IDW) This issue wraps up the current storyline, but isn't the end of the series. It has been as good as the original run from the early 1990's. John Byrne hasn't lost a step as a writer or artist on this series.

None of the titles I read came out on Wednesday, August 10, but I had to wait until payday this past Friday to go to my comic shop, Acme Comics in Longwood, Florida.

Superman #714 (DC)

It feels odd to realize this is the last issue of the old numbering, although I'd be surprised if DC didn't return to the old numbering when this title hits issue #800, or Action Comics hits issue #1,000. I'm just glad we've finally hit the end of the Grounded storyline. This story, pardon the pun, never got off the ground for me, although Chris Roberson raised my interest in it by introducing some neat plot twists in an otherwise uninspiring story.

Adventure Comics #529 (DC)

This issue wraps up the Legion Academy story. I won't be getting this title after the new relaunch, since the Legion isn't involved, but I will be getting the new Legion Lost series.

Rachel Rising #1 (Abstract Studios)

I began reading Strangers In Paradise around issue #74, so I was late for the party. But I've been on board since then. I've yet to read a bad issue done by Terry Moore, and I expect his new series to be as great as SIP and Echo.

Y The Last Man #1 (Vertigo/DC After Watchmen ... What's Next $1.00 reprint)

I've heard of this series, which has ended, but is still available in collected editions.I saw a few of these special $1.00 reprint titles that I hadn't seen on the rack before, so I decided to pick up this one to check it out.

This week two titles come to an end, before next month's DC Comics relaunch, and one new title begins:

Superman #714 (DC)

Grounded finally comes to an end. FINALLY! Chris Roberson has done a great job of making me even care about this story, injecting it with some human interest and characterization that lifted it far above J. Michael Straczynski's original premise. I hope DC can get back on track with Superman with the relaunch. Of late they have seemed to lose their handle on the character. Whatever version of the Man of Steel they have created, there is a timeless core to the character that has survived over 70 years, yet is flexible enough to adapt to the times without losing who he really is. Let's hope DC has figured it out. All I care about is a good story and a hero I can care about. And, before I forget, it'll be great to see Clark Kent back. I've missed him the last couple of years. DC has seemed to have forgotten the guy who wears the shirt and tie over his tights.

Adventure Comics #529 (DC)

This issue wraps up the Legion Academy storyline as it finishes up its part of the current Legion of Super-Villains story. What intrigues me about this issue is how it sets up the Legion's part of the upcoming DC relaunch. I'm interesting in this as much as I am how this issue sets up the conclusion of the battle with the Super Villains coming up in Legion Of Super-Heroes #16.

Rachel Rising #1 (Abstract Studios)

This is the first issue of Terry Moore's latest series. After two excellent series, Strangers In Paradise, about the twists and turns of the relationships between three friends, and Echo, a science fiction adventure, Moore tells a horror genre story. Rachel somehow returns to life after being murdered, but doesn't know who killed did it or how she was killed. But she's going to find out. I came in late on SIP, with about fifteen issues to go, but I enjoyed his craft in comic book storytelling enough to want to read Echo. Terry Moore is on the permanent list of my comic book budget, along with Superman and the Legion.

The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Century: 1969 (Top Shelf)

This was one of the best weeks for excellent comic books in a while. There were some pleasant surprises, even from a title that I haven't been as enthusiastic about lately.

Action Comics #903 (DC) * * * *

The cover for this issue pretty much sums up the main part of the story this issue, and the how provided the plot twist that raised my interest in this story. This is the best issue of the Reign Of The Doomsdays storyline. Superman as usual takes point against the Doomslayer, and the end of this issue sets up what I hope will be an exciting end to this story, before the September relaunch.

Flashpoint: Project Superman #2 (of 3) (DC) * * * *

This issue makes me glad I picked up this Flashpoint spin off mini-series. We learn what was in the rocket that crash landed in Metropolis during the meteor shower at the end of the first issue. Young Kal-El is subjected to the same tests as the first subject of the super weapon project. There are two conflicting philosophies among the staff of the project: treat Kal-El as a human being, or merely as an impersonal test subject. Familiar names such as General Lane, his daughter Lois, as well as Lex Luthor, are recast in different ways. It reads a lot like the classic imaginary stories that were a part of the silver age of comic books during my childhood in the 1960's. They were always fun reads for me, and this mini-series is no different. I can't wait to see how this story ends.

Invincible #81 (Skybound/Image) * * * * *

Invincible has to come to terms with the destruction of Las Vegas at the end of last issue. He also faces a villain who has found some familiar weapons. The main point of the issue which grabbed my attention was the dark side a superhero has to deal with, the emotional toll of collateral damage and the death and injuries of innocent victims. In real life it's something faced by police, firemen and emergency responders, as well as soldiers. Writer Robert Kirkman has done a great job of incorporating that to a superhero, which is one of the reasons he is one of my favorite comic book superhero writers.

Fables #107 (Vertigo/DC) * * * * *

This issue, drawn by guest artist Terry Moore, is about a general who uses Sleeping Beauty as part of a plan to restart the old empire. There is a force working against him, however. This issue sets up the next storyline in Fables. It seems to take place in the past of the current Fables storyline, and I'm not sure how the story will develop from here. That's one reason I'm looking forward to the next issue. I'm glad I picked up Fables beginning with issue #101. I only wish I would have started reading the series sooner. At least there are the trade paperbacks of past volumes I can catch up on.

John Byrne's Next Men #8 (IDW) * * * * *

In this issue we learn the history of one of the characters, which is a very different life story than what I would normally expect. Then the story leads to a mission for the main Next Men characters. The conclusion of this issue reads like the story is leading to an ultimate end for the series, but I was under the impression that it was a continuing series. Regardless, this is a consistently excellent series. I did a quick search on the internet and learned that the next issue, #9, will be the final issue. Then, Next Men: Aftermath will begin, starting with issue #40, which will be the 40th issue in total of the Next Men series.

The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Century: 1969 (Top Shelf Productions) * * * * *

This is the second issue of the three issue Century mini-series, the latest story of the League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen series. This issue occurs in 1969, as the title suggests. The three surviving League members, Mina, Allan and Orlando, are on the trail again of the occultists attempting to create the birth of a Moonchild. The story takes many twists and turns, and lives up to the psychedelic 1960's in Britain. Being the middle chapter of a three issue mini-series, it does have a dark ending. It was worth the wait of about a year. I can't wait to read the concluding issue. Hopefully it won't take a year for the last part of the story to be published.

Superman #713 (DC) * *

This is the next to last issue of the Grounded storyline (thank goodness). As the cover suggests, Clark/Superman has a talk with Conner Kent/Superboy and Supergirl about his future, and a stranger has a conversation with Clark about his own views on the Man of Steel. As an individual story, it's not that bad, but it doesn't make sense that Superman would have such a crisis of confidence at this point of his career. If it was caused directly from the events of the New Krypton story, maybe, but not because a woman criticized Superman because he wasn't on Earth to stop a tumor from killing her husband. At least Superman's evil stalker has finally revealed part of her plan. I just hope with the relaunch that DC can find the right people to tell good Superman stories again.

Legion Of Super-Heroes #15 (DC) * * * *

The Legionnaires continue their battle against the new Legion of Super-Villains, to Professor Li, which is a very unusual place indeed. As this is the next to last issue before the relaunch, it's mostly cover to cover action, interspersed with brief character moments. The pieces of the plot are in place for quite a climax in the final chapter of this story. Will the mystery of Professor Li be solved? What about Dream Girl's premonition about the death of a Legionnaire? I can't wait for this story's final issue to be published.

Cinderella: Fables Are Forever #6 (of 6) * * * *

The issue begins with Cinderella tied up, and she has her greatest enemy, Dorothy of the Silver Slippers, right where she wants her; or at least if you consider their past encounters as told by flashback in this mini-series. Or does she? This issue lived up to the build up of the first five issues and told the penultimate confrontation between Cinderella and Dorothy.

Terry Moore's How To Draw Women #1 (of 1) (Abstract Studios) * * * * *

This is the first of a series of comic books by Terry Moore on the How To of comic books. Instead of being a normal how to book, full of drawing tips, the majority of the issue deals with the why of drawing women. Moore explains his thinking behind drawing women the way he does. Terry is known for drawing natural women, and men for that matter, instead of the cliched superhero style of woman prevalent in superhero comic books. This book is as important of a reference as any book detailing how to draw women, or the use of various drawing tools. His plan is to publish other issues on different aspects of drawing comic books, eventually to be collected in one volume. I plan on buying future issues of this series as he publishes them. Learning the why behind drawing something is as important as the how.

I'm anxious to learn what was in the rocket that crashed landed in Metropolis in the first issue. The cover of this second issue certainly piques my interest.

The most consistently excellent superhero comic book I've read.

Terry Moore is guest artist in this issue. As if this title needed another reason for me to want to read this issue.

This issue was published near the end of March, but my local comic book shop, Acme Comics in Longwood, Florida, was shorted their order. Much of what they did receive of their order of this issue was damaged, so that only around ten of their customers were able to get a copy. It became apparent that Diamond Comics Distributor would not be filling the rest of their order. I was finally able to afford to get a copy from mycomicshop.com. It was worth the wait. This issue deals with the aftermath of the Viltrumite War, with our heroes returning to Earth. Robert Kirkman is one of those writers who can make these issues, which come after a major fight, be just as interesting as the battle itself. The characters begin to come to terms with the war, and we find that some things have changed at home. We'll find out more about these changes in future issues, as Kirkman and company begin the next major storyline.

Flashpoint: Project Superman #1 (of 3) (DC) * * * *

I wasn't going to get this title because I'm not reading the Flashpoint series, but, when Acme put it in my subscription file with no obligation, I couldn't say no. I like stories that are like the classic 1960's imaginary stories, and I was glad I did. This issue details the development of a secret government project to develop their own superhero, and no, he doesn't carry a shield. We see the reaction to someone who has powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men, but I won't spoil it here. As for what happened to our Superman, we may learn in the next issue.

Adventure Comics #528 (DC) * * * *

Graduation Day comes for the next class of Legion Academy graduates, but not everyone gets the assignment they hoped for most. We learn who goes where, and the Legion Headquarters has an intruder. This issue ties into the battle with the new Legion Of Super-Villains in the main Legion title, as this current storyline will wrap up next month for the September relaunch. It was a good action packed issue with the usual share of great character moments, a Legion staple. I'm looking forward to reading how this battle will end.

Action Comics #902 (DC) * * *

After what happened to the Eradicator last issue, the remaining Superman Family heroes have to deal with the plunging Doomsday ship that threatens Metropolis. There are some nice character moments between Lois and Jimmy, and they were my favorite parts of the issue. This storyline is okay, but that's about it. W.hile I like it better than the previous Lex Luthor story, this is not shaping up to be a story I'm very excited about. I'm not sure if I can put a finger on it. Maybe there's not enough Clark Kent. I hope DC doesn't forget about him after the September relaunch.

Superman #712 (DC) * * * *, DC Comics 0

This may be my favorite Superman issue this year, and the Man of Steel is barely in the story. The problem is, this story takes place after the end of the mini-series Infinite Crisis, and deals with the aftermath of Conner Kent Superboy's death through the eyes of Krypto. It is a very emotional and touching story. Too bad it didn't get published back then, when it would have had more impact. I'm not sure, but I seem to remember hearing that Dan Didio had pulled this story because he wasn't crazy about Krypto. But I'm not positive on that point so don't take it as fact. This story replaced the previously solicited story about Superman meeting an Arab-American superhero facing prejudice during the Man Of Steel's Grounded story. That was pulled, and there have been various reasons rumored to be behind the decision, from avoiding controversy with an Arab character, to a problem with a scene where Superman rescues a cat (too similar to Superman The Movie), to the artist being late. Who knows. This isn't the first fill in story during the Grounded plot, which makes it easier for me to look forward to the Superman relaunch. It can't happen fast enough.

Fables #106 (Vertigo/DC) * * * *

The Super Team story wraps up in an unexpected fashion. To some extent the resolution of the conflict is a little anti-climatic, but I'm relieved for the surviving Fables. There are several scenes as various characters come to terms with what happens, and leaves plot threads for the next Fables story. I don't mind how the fight between the North Wind and Mr. Dark ended. That's all I'll say without spoiling the story. The character moments that fill the issue kept my interest in this issue just fine, and I'm looking forward to the next story. The Fables aren't out of trouble just yet.

John Byrne's Next Men #7 (IDW) * * * * *

The mystery of Jasmine's disappearance is solved in this issue, and Toni's confrontation with John Wilkes Booth is also resolved. We also learn what happens to Nathan in Roman times. The Next Men's powers cut out again for some reason, and I'm sure that's a mystery that will be dealt with in the future, I'm sure. There is some more time travel, as well as alternate history, which make this a deeper story. We also learn a little bit more about the time travelers who have rescued the Next Men, or at least one of them. This series is living up the hopes I had for it when I first read the announcement.

This is the next to last issue of this title before the September relaunch, and I'm looking forward to seeing how this Legion Academy story wraps up. I won't be getting this title after the August issue, because it will feature different characters. In its place I'll be getting the new Legion Lost title. I missed the original Legion Lost series. I had to drop comics for financial reasons for a few years before it was published. I hope to be able to catch up sometime. Legion Of Super-Heroes #14 (DC) * * * *

The main plot of the issue is highlighted on the cover, Ultrra Boy and Wildfire battling Immortus, which ends in a very different and interesting way than the usual hero vs. villain fight. Professor Li has some plans to battle the threat using Star Boy, although Dream Girl has an ominous premonition. Saturn Queen gets some help in finding the mysterious third world that stands in her way of returning chaos to the galaxy, in a very shocking way. Colu begins rebuilding, and there might be a hint of some connection between two characters on opposing sides of this conflict. As usual, there is a great mix of characterization, action and plot development in the usual Paul Levitz way. This issue has done an excellent job of setting up the characters for the final conflict, with only two issues to go before DC Comics relaunches their superhero universe.

Cinderella: Fables Are Forever #5 (of 6) (Vertigo/DC) * * * * *

Cinderella is on her way toward what may be her final conflict against her greatest enemy, codenamed Silver Slipper. She gets some unexpected help out of her latest jam, but I never saw that twist ending coming. This has been a great mini-series. I wish I would have picked up the first one, which was subtitled, From Fabletown With Love. What a great way to mix the spy genre into the Vertigo Fables universe. I hope to pick up the trade paperback of the first mini-series, and hope to be able to afford future Cinderella mini-series.Maybe if I click my heels together three times.

Invincible #80 (Skybound/Image) * * * * *

The cover pretty much sums up the action in this issue, but it's not all fisticuffs. In fact, to sum up this issue in one word: changes. We see how Mark's mother is dealing with her ex-husband's return, Mark and Eve's relationship after last issue's revelation, and what's up with Mark's old college roommate William. Never saw that coming, but I did like William's last comment in that scene. The issue also has a confrontation with a new super villain that probably has never been seen in a superhero comic book. It made me think that, if superheroes were real, we'd probably see situations resolved like this once in a while. And, also typical of writer Robert Kirkman, he has written an ending that makes me want to read the next issue right now!

Supreme Power #1 ($1.00 Marvel's Greatest Comics) * * * * *

The best way to sum up this Marvel Max title (for mature readers) is a Marvel version of Superman's origin. The DC story this issue most reminded me of was Superman 2001, published in Superman #300, June 1976. In that classic Superman story, baby Kal-El landed in the ocean and was rescued by a Navy diver and raised as the adopted son of a U. S. General. In Supreme Power, an alien humanoid infant is found and raised secretly by the U. S. Government. The story shows just how dangerous it could be for a growing child to learn how to control developing super powers. I never read this series when it was originally published, not enough money to squeeze it into my budget. This is a J. Michael Straczynski "Superman" type comic book story I can enjoy, along with the Gary Frank art. Maybe one day I will pick up the rest of the series. I'll have to put this on my wish list, or maybe click my heels three times. Now, where are my shoes?

This issue has created some controversy because the original story solicited for this issue was Superman entering a town and meeting an Arab-American superhero facing prejudice. It has been replaced with a Krypto story that may have been bumped itself earlier, but I'm not totally sure about that.

Fables #106 (Vertigo/DC)

The North Wind faces off against Mr. Dark.

John Byrne's Next Men #7 (IDW)

I've always enjoyed John Byrne's art and storytelling abilities, ever since his work on Doomsday +1 for the old Charlton Comics in the 1970's.It's nice to be able to enjoy his work again each month.

This final issue of the series lived up to the anticipation that was built up with each issue. The action begins with the very first page, as Annie/Julie attempts to stop the ill fated experiment . The issue even has "Kirby Crackle", the round black dots first used by comic book artist Jack Kirby to indicate barely contained energy. Beyond that I really can't say anything without spoiling the story, only that it was well worth the time and money spent on the series. I'm going to have to read this series from the beginning, which is the highest form of praise for any comic book series.

Adventure Comics #527 * * * *

First of all, what's not to like about a Legionnaire's origin story, this time featuring Comet Queen, as this title continues the Legion Academy storyline. It's full of humor, Legion fan worship, on the part of Comet Queen, and a dose of Legion tragedy. It even tied into the main story over in Legion. I'm curious how the Legion Academy story will end before the September DC relaunch.

Kirby Genesis #0 (Dynamite Entertainment) * * * *

While I won't be getting this title, I couldn't resist this $1.00 issue #0, just to see what it;s about. Not to mention the cool Alex Ross cover. This series will take some of the non-DC or Marvel Jack Kirby creations and developing a series around them. It involves the Pioneer 10 probe, which launched with a representation of a man and woman, for whatever intelligent civilizations out there might come into contact with it. We are introduced to several groups of characters that will be part of the story. If you are a fan of Jack Kirby, I would recommend this series, even if I'm not buying it (if only for budgetary reasons.)

The Life And Times Of Scrooge McDuck ($1.00 Boom! Blast/Boom! Studios) * * * * *

I always enjoyed the Scrooge McDuck comic books when I was growing up. This particular issue is a sampler of the graphic novel written and drawn by Don Rosa, who is on par with the classic Disney Duck artist Carl Barks. It has all of the classic McDuck characters, the Beagle Boy Gang, Gyro Gearloose and of course Donald and his nephews. It involves a scheme the Beagle Boys have hatched to steal Scrooge's fortune. It involves rollicking adventure in a variety of settings. This is an all ages book in the best sense of the term, simple enough that a child could read it and enjoy, but able to also engage the reader on an adult level. Maybe that's why the classic Disney comics have stood the test of time.

Terry Moore's Echo #30 (Abstract Studios)

Usually I go to my local comic book shop, Acme Comics in Longwood, Florida, on Saturday, but, as I posted on my last blog entry, this is the final issue of Terry Moore's latest comic book series. I couldn't wait a few days to read it, so I made the trip today. I don't think I'll be disappointed. There wasn't a bad issue in the series. I would recommend anything Mr. Moore publishes to comic book readers. Next month he will publish the first of a series of comic book how to issues, this one on drawing women, which he is known for. Terry Moore draws realistic women, not the clichéd, stereotypical comic book superhero women. In July he publishes the first issue of his new monthly series, Rachel Rising, a horror series about a young woman who returns from the dead to find her murderer. I'll be picking up both.

Terry Moore's Echo #30 (Abstract Studios)

This is the final issue of this excellent science fiction adventure series. Terry Moore used his strength of creating strong, well defined characters, especially female ones, with a great plot. Usually I go to my local comic book shop, Acme Comics in Longwood, Florida on Saturday, but this time I'm going tomorrow on comic book day. I can't wait until the end of the week to read how the series ends.

Next month Terry Moore will publish the first of a series of comic book how-to issues. This first one is on how to draw women, which Mr. Moore does very well. I'm not talking about clichéd superhero women, but realistic females. Periodically he'll publish others in this series, eventually to be collected into one edition. I'll be getting this series as it is released as well.

Then in July he begins his new monthly series, Rachel Rising, a horror series about a girl who rises from the dead. Terry Moore is one of those comic book creators I'll be buying whatever series they publish.

Legion teams continue their battle against members of the reformed Legion of Super Villains on Colu, while Dream Girl continues draining the energy from Star Boy which allowed him to travel back in time to the 21st Century. Professor Li is with her, but has ideas of her own. Earth Man receives an offer, but can he refuse it? And we learn what may be the power behind Saturn Queen's quest. No title combines character moments, super hero action and multiple plots like Legion, and no writer is better at it than Paul Levitz.

Fables #105 (Vertigo/DC) * * * *

Bigby and his father, North Wind face off, and Mr. Dark takes the next step in his plan. The plot twists like a change in the wind, and I'm glad I finally picked up Fables. Great character development, great plots, and each issue moves the story along at a satisfying pace.

I'm pleasantly surprised at this new Reign Of The Doomsdays story so far. I don't feel lost, not having read the one shot issues of the other members of the Superman Family, when they were captured by Doomsday. I just didn't have the extra cash to pick them up. Plus, as much as I hate to say it, I haven't had a lot of confidence in DC with how they have been handling Superman lately. In this issue we learn that the Doomsday ship threatens more than the Supers. The issue ends with me wondering if their combined power will be enough against the threat they're facing. Compared to the Lex Luthor or Grounded stories this is better, so far.

Superman #711 (DC) * * *

The issue begins with Superman reaching Provo, Utah and receiving the key to the city from the Mayor. But he hears Jimmy's signal watch in Las Vegas and faces off against Livewire. Once again I'm pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed this title more than what I thought I would. Chris Roberson continues to make a terrible story idea begun by J. Michael Stracyznski more palatable. How the Man of Steel eventually defeats Livewire is very clever and hearkens back to earlier continuity. I also enjoyed Superman using his mind to overcome his adversary. Brains beat brawn, every time. He also got to meet his inspiration for being a hero, and gave a great definition for "Truth, Justice and the American Way" after revoking his U. S. citizenship in Action Comics #900. The only downer of the issue was the Man of Steel's conjecture about the reasons Livewire turned to a life of crime after she became an electromagnetic being, possible fixating her hate on him. I wanted to tell Superman, "It's not always about you, Superman. When someone becomes a criminal, the responsibility is all theirs, and they need to face the consequences." Otherwise I would have given it 4 (*'s) instead of 3.

Cinderella: Fables Are Forever #4 (of 6) (Vertigo/DC) * * * * *

Cinderella continues her quest against her greatest enemy, the Silver Slipper. With each issue of this mini-series we learn more of their tangled history. Cinderella had allowed herself to be captured last issue, and in this issue she comes closer to reaching her adversary. As Bigby taught her, "It's not a trap if you're aware of it first." Chris Roberson is quickly becoming one of those comic book writers I want to read more from, as money allows. I can't wait to read how this mini-series ends with the final two issues.

John Byrne's Next Men #6 (IDW) * * * * *

With the end of the Civil War, Antonia begins her quest to reach Washington, D. C., and she won;t be making her trip alone. It's fun to watch her use her 21st Century training to avoid being captured several times. The end of the issue has a surprise twist, which is common to this series. It leaves me wanting more, but that's the idea isn't it? And the next issue cover teaser helps also. It appears the story will highlight other Next Men in another era.

I had a few weeks worth of comic book to catch up on. I haven't been to my local comic book shop, Acme Comics, in Longwood Florida, since Free Comic Book Day. So, I'll list them here in reading order, with the title I'm looking forward to reading the most listed last:

Superman #711 (DC)
While Superman is my favorite comic book character, the current Grounded storyline has been one of my least favorite plots. But Chris Robeson's writing has made recent issues better than Straczynski's original run which began this story.

Action Comics#901 (DC)
The Man of Steel finally makes his return to his original title after an almost two year absence. How DC Editorial has been handling Superman lately has left me with a wait and see attitude for the new Reign Of The Doomsdays story.

Legion Of Super-Heroes #13 (DC)
This title has been my favorite regular DC Comics title. I prefer its stories over the recent Superman stories, sad to say. But the Legion is my second favorite group of characters, after the Man of Steel. So it is one of those titles I'll always read. And Paul Levitz has continued to show that he hasn't lost his storytelling ability.

Cinderella: Fables Are Forever #4 (of 6) (Vertigo/DC)
I missed the original Cinderella mini-series, sad to say. I'm enjoying this spin off as much as Fables itself.

Fables #105 (Vertigo/DC)
I'm looking forward to this issue. The cover looks very ominous, as the Fables are safe, temporarily, in their refuge.

John Byrne's Next Men #6 (IDW)
John Byrne continues to show, like Paul Levitz, that he is as good of a writer, and artist, as he ever was. With each issue Byrne develops an interesting story with plenty of plot twists. This series is as good as the original Next Men series from the 1990's.

Maybe I'm getting older, but I like reading about the secret identity as much as the caped super hero.

Adventure Comics #526 (DC) * * * *

The Legion Academy trouble making cadets finally show that they did learn something at the Academy. We also learn the secret behind how Chemical Kid got his powers from dear old Dad. This issue was a good change of pace, showing them using their heads for something other than for figuring out new ways to get into trouble. I almost felt sorry for the bad guys. Almost. The second story, Mosaic, was about Legionnaire XS. It was nice to see her again. She was part of the post Zero Hour Legion, if I remember correctly. Her power was super speed, like the Flash. What I liked about this story was that it shed a little light into the break up of Night Girl's relationship with Cosmic Boy. It was a good story for character development, but I did like the main story a little better.

Action Comics #900 * * *

This issue has received a lot of publicity, less for reaching such a milestone than the controversy of a plot development in one of the shorter stories in the back (which I won't spoil here). My favorite stories were some of these back stories. The main story, which wrapped up the Luthor story in Action and set up the next plot with Doomsday. Superman's conflict with Luthor was psychedelic and trippy, but not too incomprehensible.It wasn't bad, but it didn't blow me away either. I'm taking a wait and see attitude, to see if the Superman titles will improve over recent storylines. I give The Black Ring Finale / Reign Of Doomsday * * *.

Life Support, written by one of the producers of Lost, is about Jor-El preparing his son's rocket, and needing help from someone to solve certain problems. It was a sad and touching story about what parents will do for their children. I rate it * * * *.

Autobiography, written by Paul Dini, is about a conversation Superman had with another being with powers and abilities far beyond normal men, who was also a planet's protector. But he/she found a battle it could not win against, and had to make a choice. It was a different Superman story, but very thought provoking. I also give it * * * *.

Friday Night In The 21st Century is a fun lighthearted story about Lois giving Clark a rare evening at home with close friends. This story, written by Geoff Johns and drawn by Gary Frank was a nice change of pace, a simple and fun read. * * * *

The Incident is probably the story that garnered the most publicity when this issue was released. It involves a decision Superman makes after recent actions by the Man of Steel create an international incident for the United States. While I wasn't as upset with his decision as some members of the public have been, I thought that DC made a mistake by taking that route, and seem to be back pedaling afterward. If this was done just as a publicity stunt I don't think it worked. From some of the reaction I don't think it will make people want to read Superman, just the opposite. And if DC didn't expect this reaction from the public, maybe they're out of touch with Superman, and their audience. It was a decent story, and I'd give it 4 ( * ) because of Superman's reasons for making this decision, but it only gets * * * because I don't think that DC should have toyed with one of the foundations of the Man of Steel's character.

Only Human, co-written by Richard Donner and told in storyboard form, was about someone who gets super powers through a high tech suit. There was some good interactions between Clark and Lois, who take differing opinions over this new would be superhero. * * *

The issue ends with a great two page spread drawn by Brian Steelfreeze, showing Superman's changing looks over the decades.

This is the first direct salvo between the Legion and the reformed Legion of Super-Villains.Brainiac 5 continues draining the time travel energy from Star Boy in the hopes of returning him to sanity, while Saturn Queen and the rest of the Super-Villains proceed with their quest to bring chaos to the United Planets. Other Legionnaires investigate Sun Killer in Okinawa, as Green Lantern Mon'El and Dyogene go to the destroyed Rock of Eternity. Paul Levitz and the art team continue to combine action and character development in the classic Legion manner, without rehashing old Legion stories. The Legion title has never been better.

Invincible #79 (Skybound/Image) * * * *

The tone of the issue is summed up with the cover, which shows Mark and Eve visiting the retired Multi-Kate, Immortal and their twin children. There are some scenes of Invincible getting back into the superhero groove, but the emphasis is on Mark settling back into a normal life on Earth. That doesn't make for a boring issue, however. Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ottley know how to create interesting scenes of characters having conversations. And this issue delivers an emotional impact.

Fables #104 (Vertigo/DC) * * * *

The Fables' super team continue their training to fight Mr. Dark, while Mrs. Spratt continues her own training. Bigby and Snow come to a personal decision. The situation continues to get darker for the Fables' community as they try to survive. Fables is another title that combines great character development and action. And, looking at the cover teaser for the next issue, things might be getting even darker for the Fables.

Their original order of #78 was shorted, and a lot of what they did get was damaged. They have been in contact with Diamond since then, and are more frustrated than me about it. I did go to two other comic shops, but no luck so far finding the lost issue #78. I might have to order it online. I'll keep you posted.

Superman #710 (DC) * * *

In this issue Superman has his second encounter with Batman during this Grounded storyline, but this time he encounters the original, Bruce Wayne. Half of this issue is a flashback to a previously untold story of when they first met, before their costumed superhero days. Batman gave the Man of Steel some heat felt advice. It was a touching scene. The only thing that bothers me is that it shows how faulty the Grounded storyline is. The less the issue is involved with that plot the better it is. Thank goodness it's almost over.

Adventure Comics#525 (DC) * * * *

Chemical Kid gets a rude awakening, and the senior class of Legion Academy take their final exam. It's a great issue of action and character development, which writer Paul Levitz delivers with each issue. At the end of the issue is a second feature about the Black Witch and Blok, and her struggle to contain the evil wizard Mordru. It was a very touching story. I'll be sad to see this Legion Academy storyline come to an end.

Cinderella: Fables Are Forever (Vertigo/DC) * * * * *

Cinderella continues her quest to hunt down her deadliest enemy, the Silver Slipper. What I like about this series is that intercut with the action are flashbacks which reveal their past encounters, as they relate to Cinderella's present situation. They add depth to the story as Cinderella makes her way through the underbelly of the Fables' world.

John Byrne's Next Men #5 (IDW) * * * * *

We learn more about Bethany's role in the future, as well as more about the brutal lives of the other Next Men in their various eras of time. Just when I thought Toni couldn't have been mutilated any more in the Confederacy, she suffers more. But eventually, there's no holding her down. Nathan goes from prisoner of one army to another, and Jasmine suffers from the plague. The next issue teaser features a scene that was mentioned in an earlier issue of this new series. John Byrne is doing a great job of slowly unveiling the story while keeping my interest high.

Action Comics #899 (DC) * * * 1/2

We come to the final installment of the Lex Luthor Black Ring Saga, and learn all the details from the villain, who operated behind the scenes. and was revealed at the end of last issue. Also, how does Luthor hold his own against his manipulator? That's for you to find out. I enjoyed the move and counter move by the two adversaries, but the ending was a little out there for my taste. But it does set up an interesting villain for Superman to face when he returns to Action Comics with issue #99, after a two year absence. It's been too long in my book.

Jimmy Olsen #1 (One Shot) (DC) * * * *

This collected all of the Jimmy Olsen second features that ran in the back of Action Comics until the end of 2010, when DC dropped the price and page count. The remaining chapters that were not published fill out the story. First of all, I love the Amanda Conner cover. She has a way of showing the humor and emotion of a scene. This is the story that introduced Chloe Sullivan of the TV show Smallville to DC Comics. I really enjoyed this story. I like a Jimmy Olsen who has pluck and is resourceful, and doesn't need Superman to bail him out all of the time. The plot gives Jimmy plenty of opportunities to think on his feet, dealing with party hardy aliens and would be world conquerers. This oversized issue was worth the $5.99 cover price.

Terry Moore's Echo #29 (Abstract Studios) * * * * *

First of all, the cover is a scene from one of the panels in the book. Terry Moore has all of the characters in place now for the grand finale issue. He also does a masterful job of using dialog to develop each character and give them their own moment in the spotlight. We finally learn the motives of all of the major players in this story. Now all that's left is to learn which side will win in the final issue. While it's sad to see this title end, Terry Moore will publish a How To Draw Women comic book in June, and the first issue of his new series, Rachel Rising, in July. I'll be getting both. As I've said before, I've never read a bad issue by Terry Moore.

Legion Of Super-Heroes #11 (DC) * * * *

As the editor's note mentions, this issue picks up after the special issue, The Legion Of Super-Villains. The Legion of Super-Heroes help the Science Police round up the escaped prisoners of the prison planet Takron-Galtos. On top of everything else, Brainiac 5 has to deal with the condition of one of the Legionnaires. The issue ends with a mystery about one of the member worlds of the United Planets. With every issue, Paul Levitz and the rest of the creative team have returned the Legion to a firm foundation and have steered the title in a definite direction. I hope it sells enough copies so that we won't see another reboot for a long time.

Fables #102 (Vertigo/DC) * * * *

The issue begins the morning after Bigby and Snow had a happy reunion after being apart because of the previous storyline. Geppetto sets some plans in motion while others do the same at Darkland and at the fortress of the North Wind. The Fables in Haven are solidifying their superhero team in preparation for the dangers looming in the near future. this is an interesting storyline to jump into, with Fables incorporating the modern myths of superhero comic books. In the middle of some dark scenes, it's funny to see the Fables deciding on iconic members for their team. It doesn't matter who publishes superhero comic books, they all have the same iconic her types. This is a very enjoyable story.

The Wellkeeper #'s 2 - 4 (Half Moon Press) * * * *

I picked up issues #0 and #1 at last year's MegaCon, and I got the next three issues from creator Derrick Fish at this year's Con. This is the story of Zoe, a young girl who has inherited the powers of the Wellkeeper from her grandmother. It is the ability to tap into and manipulate the life force of Earth, in order to protect it. Dark forces try to kill her, and her friend Sebastian gets caught in the middle. Derrick has fleshed out a very well thought out world in this fantasy story. The black and white art is worth more than the cover price. The line work fills the panel with incredible details that add richness to the story. He has an excellent sense of panel layout that moves the eye along and flows the story smoothly. This title is as good as anything else you can find at your local comic book shop. Note: Invincible #78 (Skybound/Image) was published this week, but my local comic shop, Acme Comics in Longwood, Florida, was shorted, which means that they did not receive all of the copies they ordered. Some issues they did get were damaged. To be fair to their customers, they filled their orders alphebetically. Unfortunately for me, I wasn't close enough to the front of the alphabet to get a copy this week. But I;m not angry, because Acme always has great customer service. They will get more copies next week.

This weekend was MegaCon 2011 in Orlando, Florida. On Friday, I went to Artist's Alley and looked up Derek Fish, who I met at Acme. He was selling copies of his self published comics book series The Wellkeeper. At last year's MegaCon I bought issues #0 and #1. This year he had issues 2 - 4, which I picked up. The great John Cassaday cover was the latest in the long line of Superman / Flash covers. I won't spoil whether or not this is another Superman vs. Flash race, but it does tease the Superboy vs. Kid Flash race over in Superboy #5. The beginning of this story seemed out of the silver age, but once again, I'm pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this issue. The Flash does bring a positive influence on Superman, as they discuss their growing awareness of their legacies. Barry was a breath of fresh air for the Man of Steel, encouraging a friend who's going through a tough time. I hope Roberson gets to stick around after Grounded finishes, and gets his chance to shine as a writer of Superman stories.

Adventure Comics #524 (DC) * * * *

The cadets face the consequences for their actions at the end of last issue, and the wrath of Duplicate Girl. I don't think I want to get on her bad side. So, do they stay grounded? Of course not. They take a Legion practice cruiser to Chemical Kid's home planet of Phlon, where they quickly get over their heads. The Legion Academy storyline is a great companion to the regular Legion title. Any Legion title with Bouncing Boy in it can't be bad. Now if only Paul Levitz would bring back Matter Eater Lad. Maybe he could be the head cook for the Academy.

While the Grounded storyline is underwhelming, the last few issues by mew writer Chris Roberson have been better. Whether that's because I like this part of J. Michael Straczynski's plot, or Roberson is improving the story, I don't know. I don't think it'll be enough to consider Grounded a good story, but it will be over soon.

Legion Of Super-Heroes #1 (One Shot) (DC) * * * *

This issue picks up the plot involving Saturn Queen in recent Legion issues. It's not too much of a spoiler to say she escaped, and reformed the Legion of Super-Villains, with some old and new members. This time she establishes that she is in charge very quickly. Her quest is to destroy three key locations in the universe to return it to a stat of chaos. Reading this issue I got the feeling that there is an unseen presence behind everything. This story will probably come to the forefront very quickly in the pages of Legion Of Super-Heroes. It doesn't bode well for the Legionnaires, but it promises to be great reading for us.

Cinderella: Fables Are Forever #2 (of 6) (Vertigo/DC) * * * *

We learn more about the background of Cinderella's enemy Silver Slipper and their past battles. Cinderella and Ivan Durak travel across the world to one of her past contacts to get more information on her greatest enemy and what she may be doing. She finds out the hard way. This mini-series matches the best James Bond movies for intrigue and action. If you're looking for smart female comic book characters, Cinderella will not disappoint you.

This is all I got from my local comic book shop. Acme Comics in Longwood, Florida today. I've stopped getting back issues to fill in the hole in my Superman collection for the time being. After this Legion special issue, there's another Jimmy Olsen one-shot issue coming up. It will wrap up Jimmy's second feature story which was in Action Comics before DC's price reduction to $2.99. Plus, I'm getting this Cinderella mini-series as well. Back issues will have to wait for awhile.
